Lone
Wolf (Ogami Itto) is separated from his cub Daigoro in the course
of a mission to find and kill the tattooed mistress of martial
arts, Oyuki. Daigoro is found at the mercy of a rival of his father,
Ogami Itto. Ogami eliminates the problem with his routine efficiency.
Despite continuous harassment from Yagyu assassins, Lone Wolf
discovers Oyuki. Although he admires her, he is contracted to
destroy her. All this time, the evil lord Retsudo is coming closer
to Lone Wolf, and he's bringing an army with him.
Four
episodes into the series and it's time for a new director to have
a bash at things. This time around we're treated to the slightly
emotional side of Ogami Itto.
The
beginning of the films sees the beautiful, tattooed and very topless
Oyuki killing some attackers. We don't know where there from but
we do know she's cutting off the dead men's topknots. Doing so
disgraces the victim and the victim's family. Ogami Itto is hired
to kill and sets off to find her with his usual determination.
When the Lone Wolf and his Cub stop off at a village, Daigoro
hears the antics of some street performers and runs off to see
them. He becomes lost and tries searching for his father only
to bump into one of Ogami Itto's old foes. It's here that we're
treated to a flashback telling how it was that Ogami Itto bested
the Yagyu clan's best warrior to become the Official Executioner
of the Shogunate. Like it says on the box, Ogami dispatches the
foe in his usual style. With Lone Wolf and Cub reunited, the two
set off to find Oyuki. This task proves more difficult than it
sounds as Ogami begins to sympathise with Oyuki's predicament.
Before
I say anything else it's time for me to complain about the fact
Babycart In Peril shares the same darkness problem as the other
films. Thankfully it was only in one scene but I get the feeling
I missed a really good fight. Despite this annoying problem, Babycart
In Peril is still a great episode of the Lone Wolf and Cub series.
It was definitely a wise decision to give us some background on
why the Yagyu clan want Ogami dead. It was also good to see the
human side of Ogami as he searches for his son and starts to sympathise
towards Oyuki.
Naturally,
this being a samurai film, we get a few fights to entertain us.
That's all thanks to the Yagy clan sending a constant stream of
people to kill Ogami. It all culminates in a huge battle where
the nefarious Retsudo makes an appearance to battle Ogami. But
before Ogami can get to Retsudo he has to fight the army of guards
he's brought with him. It's a tough challenge but if anyone can
do it, Ogami can.
As
I said earlier, this is a welcome addition to the series and is
definitely one of the better episodes. Sadly, once again I have
to knock a point off for the fact that the scenes in the dark
are still suffering the problem of not being able to see a thing.
