This is a bland example of the post Ring style horror movies that has permeated our filmmaking world. Will this endless barrage of cheesy horror movies with evil kids ever end?

The film starts out with a young couple that are trying to have a child, and have been trying for sometime but to no avail. The husband (Do-il) suggests adopting a child and the wife (Mi-sook) reluctantly agrees. They go to an agency and meet a young lad (Jin-seong) that happens to be a very active artist, and of course the art is grim and holds graphic visions of his now deceased mother whom he thinks has been re-incarnated as a tree. They adopt him and all is fairly well; he has a bizarre obsession with the tree that grows in their back garden but nobody thinks anything of it. The mother-in law constantly talks about Jin-seong being evil and that they should have never adopted him. It is at this point that Mi-sook becomes pregnant and has a child. This creates a rivalry between the two kids for attention of the parents, and even though the baby doesn’t know it Jin-seong tries to kill him. It is at this point that it all goes a bit strange and unpredictable. Jin-seong goes missing and the entire family do not know what to do about it, so they decide not to do anything. Inevitably Jin-seong keeps appearing and disappearing and causes all sorts of supernatural havoc, or so we think. The husband goes mad and becomes an alcoholic and a wife beater blaming Mi-sook and in general the film becomes over complicated leading towards the ending.

You might have noticed the longer than usual film description, I have done this simply because you will not want to bother with the film. This is a pretentious over complicated and badly made film that simply relies on cheap scare tactics that aren’t very scary. There are a couple of very cool looking set pieces, but they are right at the end and I have to question whether they are worth the wait, and my answer sadly is no. The story is unclear through a large section of the film and has real problems explaining what is going on, and it takes ages to get to the point. The acting is weak and the kid simply walks around looking evil. The funniest part of this film however is the music, every time Jin-seong does something, even the most mundane little activity, it warrants an ominous music cue and a close up of his evil eyes. Example - ‘Mum I’m going outside’ DUH-DUH-DUNNN (Close up). The film is simply boring, longwinded and unoriginal.

This film is worth avoiding at all costs, the lack lustre storyline, the endless twist endings and the boring look made this film tedious and frustrating. Watch at your own risk.
